Our Story

The 18-hole golf course was originally designed by the late Willard Byrd, a nationally renowned golf course architect. His work at Wilson Country Club received rave reviews for its beauty and overall playability. The club has hosted eight Carolinas Golf Association majors: 2010 NC Men’s Amateur, 2009 NCWGA Ladies’ State Amateur, several US Open qualifiers, Web.Com Tour qualifiers, the club’s annual Two Ball Invitational and its annual Pro-Am Invitational.

Wilson Country Club underwent a renovation in 2005 to modernize the course and improve the putting surfaces. Architect John LaFoy was chosen to do the renovation and work began in May 2005. LaFoy has redesigned more than 100 golf courses throughout the country including many classic layouts such as those of architects A.W. Tillinghast, Alistair Mackenzie, Seth Raynor, Charles Blair MacDonald and numerous Donald Ross designs.

Today, the course is home to numerous golf clinics and camps for beginners and advanced golfers as our golf staff can customize a program to fit your needs.

McConnell Golf Today

Under the direction of John McConnell as CEO, McConnell Golf, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year is the region’s largest owner of premier private clubs with a portfolio featuring 15 18-hole golf courses throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. McConnell Golf also leases and provides management services to Raleigh Golf Association (RGA) which is a 27-hole public course. In the fall of 2022, McConnell Golf signed a long-term management agreement with Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech, expanding its portfolio of courses into the Mid-Atlantic region. Most recently, McConnell Golf acquired Wilson Country Club which opened in 1915, featuring a Willard Byrd-designed golf course that was renovated by John LaFoy in 2005.
